Deaf Dog with Cropped Ears Learns Sign Language to Find a Forever Home

Polo: The Deaf Dog Learning Sign Language in Search of a Forever Home

In a heartwarming tale of resilience and hope, Polo, a five-year-old crossbreed dog, is on a journey to find her forever home. Rescued from a life of neglect, Polo is not only overcoming her traumatic past but is also learning sign language to communicate better with potential adopters. This remarkable effort is being spearheaded by the RSPCA Southport in Merseyside, where Polo is currently being fostered.

    A Troubling Past

Polo’s story begins in April of last year when she was discovered chained in a yard on an industrial estate in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The conditions she was found in were dire; she was suffering from a prolapse and was pregnant at the time of her rescue. RSPCA inspector Joanne Taylor recounted the harrowing details of Polo’s situation, emphasizing the urgent veterinary care she required. After receiving treatment, Polo gave birth to a single puppy, Daisy, who has since been rehomed. Unfortunately, Polo remains in the care of the RSPCA, waiting for a loving family to adopt her.

One of the most distressing aspects of Polo’s past is the cropping of her ears, a cruel practice that is illegal in England and Wales. This mutilation has left her with the tips of her ears missing, a physical reminder of the suffering she endured. Despite this, Lily Dickinson, the fostering and adoption coordinator at RSPCA Southport, urges potential adopters not to be deterred by Polo’s appearance or her deafness. "We really want people to see her for the lovely girl she is," Dickinson stated.

    Learning to Communicate

In an inspiring twist, Polo is learning sign language as a means to bridge the communication gap caused by her deafness. Dickinson describes Polo as a "quick learner" who enjoys engaging in training sessions. The RSPCA team has been teaching her essential commands using hand gestures, including "sit," "lie down," "drop," and "find it." This innovative approach not only aids in her training but also enhances her chances of finding a suitable home.

Polo’s progress has been encouraging. Dickinson shared that Polo has been enjoying her walks and has even been taken to local dog walking spots to explore her surroundings. "She walks nicely on the lead and has a good recall using hand gestures," she explained. The hope is that by showcasing Polo’s ability to learn and adapt, potential adopters will see her as a loving companion rather than a dog with disabilities.

A Kind Soul in Need of Love

Described as a "kind soul," Polo has a gentle demeanor that makes her an ideal candidate for adoption. Dickinson noted that Polo is laid-back and friendly, even serving as an introduction dog for new arrivals at the RSPCA. Despite her size and strength, which may require experienced owners, Polo is playful and has an abundance of love to give.

The RSPCA is currently facing a rehoming crisis, with statistics revealing that 42% more animals arrived at their shelters last year than were adopted. In 2022, 28,208 animals were rehomed, while 40,118 pets were placed in shelters across England and Wales. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for compassionate individuals to consider adopting pets like Polo.

    The Adoptober Campaign

In light of the ongoing rehoming crisis, the RSPCA has launched its annual month-long Adoptober campaign. This initiative aims to encourage people to adopt pets from the RSPCA or other rescue centers rather than purchasing from breeders. The campaign is particularly important for animals like Polo, who have faced adversity and are in desperate need of loving homes.

As Polo continues her journey of learning and healing, the hope remains that she will find a family willing to embrace her unique qualities. With her newfound skills in sign language and her affectionate nature, Polo is ready to bring joy and companionship to the right owner.

In conclusion, Polo’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the transformative power of love and care. By spreading awareness about her situation and the importance of adopting rescue animals, we can help ensure that dogs like Polo find the homes they deserve. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting Polo or any other rescue animal, consider reaching out to the RSPCA or your local animal shelter. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these deserving pets.
