Greenville Humane Society Announces Ambitious Expansion Project

GREENVILLE, S.C. — In a groundbreaking announcement that promises to transform animal care in the Upstate region of South Carolina, the Greenville Humane Society (GHS) unveiled its ambitious expansion project on Tuesday. Dubbed "Love is a Four Legged Word," this initiative aims to address the pressing needs of the community while enhancing the welfare of animals in the area.

A New Home for Animal Care

The GHS has acquired a prime piece of land along the scenic Swamp Rabbit Trail, where it plans to build a state-of-the-art facility at 300 Airport Rd. This new location will feature a 9,260 square foot public spay and neuter clinic, which is set to increase the organization’s surgical capacity by an impressive 50 percent. This expansion is not merely about increasing space; it’s about providing more affordable and accessible veterinary care to the community.

    Multifunctional Spaces for Community Engagement

In addition to the clinic, the new facility will include a 7,950 square foot multipurpose space designed for education, training, and community events. This versatile area will host a variety of programs, including:

    • Public Dog Training Classes: Helping pet owners foster better relationships with their furry companions.
    • Humane Education Programs: Teaching the community about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
    • Birthday Party Venues: Offering a unique space for pet-themed celebrations.
    • Community Meeting Spaces: Providing a venue for local organizations and groups to gather.
    • Flexible Areas for Fundraising Events: Supporting the ongoing mission of GHS through community involvement.
    • Pet Remembrance Garden: A serene space for honoring beloved pets who have passed away.

This multipurpose space will not only serve the needs of the animals but will also strengthen the bond between the community and its furry residents.

Addressing Critical Needs in the Community

Rachel Delport, CEO of the Greenville Humane Society, emphasized the importance of this expansion in her statement: "This expansion is a direct response to the surging demand for affordable pet care and education in our community. By tackling pet overpopulation and veterinary shortages head-on, we’re ensuring that more animals can find loving homes and be pets for life. We cannot continue to place band-aids on reoccurring issues – we must find sustainable solutions. That’s exactly what we’ve set out to do with this expansion."

The new facility will also provide additional space to house 100 more animals, significantly increasing GHS’s capacity to save lives. This means thousands of animals could be rescued and cared for each year, giving them a second chance at finding loving homes.

A Call to Action for the Community

Cindy Crick, Chair of the GHS Board, echoed Delport’s sentiments, stating, "Time and again, Greenville has shown that our mission matters. We’re calling on our community to rise to this challenge once more and help us create a lasting impact for animals in need."

To bring this vision to life, GHS is seeking to raise $8.5 million. This funding will be crucial in ensuring that the new facility meets the needs of both the animals and the community it serves.
